Nutrition Defined

Nutrition has been defined as food at work in the body. Nutrition includes everything that happens to food from the time it is eaten until it is used for various functions in the body. Nutrition is the component of food that is need by the body inadequate amount in order to grow, reproduce and lead to normal healthy life. Nutrients include water, proteins, fat, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.

Nutrition is the process where living organisms utilize food for maintenance of life, growth the normal functioning of organs and tissue and the production of energy.

Human nutrition is the scientific discipline that deals with nutrition in man. In particular it is concerned with the nutritional requirements, food consumption, food habits, the nutritive value of foods and diet and health, and with research in these fields.

Nutrient

Nutrients are component of foods, contain some chemical substances that are needs by the body in adequate amount in order to grow reproduce and lead a normal healthy life. The nutrients are mainly Carbohydrate, Protein, Fat, Vitamins, Minerals and Water. Nutrients also give us energy, growth, helps to repair body tissues and regulate body function. Therefore each nutrient can be vital to our health.

Function of nutrients:

  • Supplies energy
  • Helps build and repair body tissues
  • Helps build antibodies
  • Aids in the development and maintenance of night vision
  • Aids in maintaining the health of the skin and membranes
  • A factor in the formation and maintenance of bones and teeth
  • Aids in normal growth and development
  • Required for normal cell function and regulation of blood volume
  • Needed for proper nerve, muscle and blood cell function

  • To determine the basic nutrition required for human beings which could be given as a guideline to promote the health and nutritional status throughout the life cycle.
  • Secondly, if we can adopt this type of nutrition practice the health status for general will be developed.

Malnutrition

Malnutrition is an undesirable kind of nutrition leading to ill health. It is a state in which the physical function of an individual is impaired to the point, where he or she can no longer maintenance an adequate level of performance in physical work, mental capacity, resisting (recurring ) from illness. The term malnutrition refers to both under nutrition and over nutrition (malnutrition plus) conditioned by deprivation and excess.

Calorie:
A calorie is a unit of energy. In nutrition language, calories refer to energy consumption through eating and drinking and energy usage through physical activity. For example, a banana may have 100 calories, while a 1 mile walk may use up about 100 calories. In Australia, we use Kilojoules and 1 Calorie equals 4.1868 Kilojoules.

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA):
The Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) are quantities of nutrients in the diet that are required to maintain good health in people. RDAs are established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. A separate RDA value exists for each nutrient. The RDA values suggest to the amount of nutrient expected to maintain good health in people. The actual amounts of each nutrient required to maintain good health in specific individuals differ from person to person.
